The Many Sides of Drawing

When I was in 6th grade, one of my friends had introduced me to an artist named Alex Pardee. I was never really into art or drawing, so the very fact that these drawings peaked my interest was a sign that I would soon be delving deeper into the subject. His drawings are incredibly unique that capture many different motifs set out by today's society among other things. They depict crudely drawn creatures acting in somewhat human ways in a surreal way. The drawings also often exaggerate every day behaviors by adding a sort of "evil" twist on them. This is what I find really interesting. What the drawings really do is give you a front row seat into what is going on in his mind. Being able to express yourself through creative drawing is something that I really respect. Mainly because I can not for the life of me draw anything that I could revert back and say that that's how I am feeling.

This is what I feel what makes drawing a very unique form of creativity. "The ideas and concepts so conceived can then manifest themselves in any number of ways, but most often, they become something we can see, hear, smell, touch, or taste. "(Mumford, 2003, p. 110) In this case, it is a visual representation of the artist's views and values. However, I feel like in Alex Pardee's case, he simply draws what he finds interesting and makes it even more interesting. Surrealism art is where Pardee gets most of his influence from and it shows very obviously. “Surrealist works feature the element of surprise, unexpected juxtapositions and non sequitur; however, many Surrealist artists and writers regard their work as an expression of the philosophical movement first and foremost, with the works being an artifact.” (Wikipedia “Blog”) The first ever surrealism art came to be in the early 1900’s in a French play called “Les Mamelles de TirĂ©sias”. The play depicts a woman who changes her sex in order to gain power over men. Long story short, the plot was a rather ridiculous story that involved actions that just couldn’t happen in the real world. Ever since that play, artists who support the surrealist views have strived to make real the values that the form of art finds important. Alex Pardee embodies all of these surrealist values if not more in all of his drawings. I hope to continue to study his drawings throughout this unit so that I can be exposed to his great works of art and see just what goes on in that crazy head of his.
