Jason Kottke: A Pioneer of Blogging

Jason Kottke is known as one of the pioneers of the, and he continues to be one of the top bloggers of today (Wikipedia: "Jason Kottke"). In order to find out what has made him so popular and successful in the blogging field I decided to do some research on Mr. Kottke.

Jason Kottke was born on September 27, 1973, and has spent most of his life in New York City, where he currently works. Kottke graduated from Coe College with a degree in physics in 1995, and shortly after he he became a web designer, a job in which he was very successful (Wikipedia: "Jason Kottke"). So at this point you must be thinking, "Wait one of the pioneers of blogging has a degree in physics, and he use to be a web designer. How did he get started in blogging?" Well let me explain.

In March of 1998 Kottke started his first blog, and in 2000 he was featured in the New Yorker article "You've Got Blog," which helped makes blogging more popular. His contributions to the blogging industry are widely known, and he even received a Bloggie Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003. Finally in 2005 Kottke gave up his web design career and decided to dedicate all his time to work on his current blog, kottke.org (Wikipedia: "Jason Kottke"). So obviously Kottke is a very influential person the blogging industry, so let’s take so time to talk about his work that has made him so popular.

Kottke is known for blogging about everything and everyone, but he does like to focus on popular culture and people. He has written blogs on various topics such as, how murderers prep for job interviews, cool skateboarding videos and Stanley Kubrick's favorite movies (McCraken 13). So as you can see Kottke actually does blog about everything, and this is what has made him so popular throughout his career. In addition to covering a wide array of topics, Kottke also creates very humorous and informational blogs (kottke.org).

Example of one of Kottke's blogs

One of the keys behind Kottke's success is that he has dedicated his life and career to blogging. As I said earlier, in 2005 he quit he day job as a web designer in order to focus on his blog. He also does not make much money off of his blog, which runs off of donations and advertising (Wikipedia: "Jason Kottke"). Even though he has a low income, Kottke still dedicates his life to his blogging. It is this type of dedication though that has made him the successful and well known blogger that he is today. Some good examples of his work are a blog that he did on the life of musician Kurt Cobain, and a blog  that covers the daily rituals of how artists work (which relates very well to what he are learning about in class) (kottke.org). If anyone would like to view these works you can click on the link that is attached to the word blog.

One of the most impressive things about Kottke is that he learned how to blog on his own (McCraken 13).There was no one that taught him how to blog and he never took any classes on blogging, because when he first started blogging the word blog didn’t even exist. This along with his dedication to bettering the blogging field are the reasons that I found him to be so interesting.
