Alex Pardee: The Man Behind the Madness

Surrealism art on its own is really quite fascinating. However, there is one artist who I feel stands out amongst the rest. Alex Pardee, a renowned exaggerative surrealism artist, started out his career in the mid 90’s applying to multiple art schools in order to get comics that he war creating published. After being rejected multiple times, he came to the realization that he could very easily put all of his artwork all over the internet in order to expose it to more people. “I wasn’t trying to really DO anything with my art. I just wanted people to see it in hopes of getting some feedback, even if that feedback was critical and hateful…which it was. But it was helpful” (Pardee).

Pardee says that he gets most of his inspiration from older cartoons like back in the 60’s. Another interesting thing that Pardee gets his inspiration from are from people who create their own universes and work hard to make those made of universes a reality. Words like these really make me appreciate Alex Pardee for what he does and creates. Being able to manifest such creations is one thing, but to actually go about illustrating them on paper or canvas, whatever it may be, is a whole other thing. “I’m inspired by people without expectation to succeed but with enough passion to excel on their own, and by artists who somehow find a way to make a living by creating entire universes that didn’t exist before they made them, but now will never be forgotten” (Pardee).

His philosophies on why he chooses to make these drawings is another reason I feel Alex Pardee truly is a remarkable surrealism artist. Coincidentally enough, Pardee also said that he gets some of the thought processes behind his drawings from bizarre cartoons like Adventure Time. As a viewer of his art and someone who knows about that cartoon, I can honestly say that I wasn’t surprised when I read that. If you were to watch an episode or two of Adventure Time, and seen all the wacky and crazy things that exist in the lore and universe of that TV show, one could easily understand how and why Pardee says this. Pardee is always looking forward to testing out new art materials on his drawings. Being able to use different tools allows for him to create unique textures and techniques in his work so that each work is different in its own way.

Alex Pardee shows how creative minds can still be incredibly successful in today’s day and age. Regardless of what the higher authority thinks, as long as you get your work out there and exposed to people who can really appreciate your work for what it is, is what matters. I think that Pardee can prove to be a role model for many aspiring artist around the world who are trying to get their works out to the public. His philosophies, inspirations, and work ethic can easily nudge ambitious artists to take the first step in becoming a more popular surrealism artist.
