Blogging: A New Way of Sharing Information

Blogging was something that I had always heard about, but I had never read any blogs or more importantly knew what blogging exactly was. However, earlier this year my friend introduced me to a blogging site called Barstool, and I was immediately captured by the writing style and atmosphere of the blogs. I enjoyed the informal aspect of blogs, and I was a big fan of the humor that couldn’t be found in a normal newspaper article. After conducting more research on blogging I found that it is a quickly growing field, and that it is changing the way news and information are presented to the public.

The history of blogging in a way began with the invention of the World Wide Web in 1990 (Rettberg 6). However, it wasn’t until 1994 that the first blogs were put onto the internet in the form of online diaries, by people such as Justin Hall (Rettberg 7). At this time in history the word “blog” or “weblog” didn’t exist, and it wasn’t until1997 when John Barger suggested that the word “weblog” be used to describe online diaries (Rettberg 8).

Although blogging originated in the 1990s, it wasn’t the same as what it is today. When people first started blogging they had to hand code their sites and make their blogs completely from scratch (Rettberg 9). The first blogging site, Open Diary, was founded in 1999, and it was quickly followed by the creation of Blogger later that year (Rettberg 9). A few years later in 2004 the activity of blogging began to become very popular, with three million people using blogs and the number of blogs was doubling each month (Rettberg 12). Since then blogging has become a major field in the information industry, and it has inspired major social networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest (Rettberg 13).

Today there are many different types and styles of blogs that exist. One of the most common types of blogs is the personal blog, which is an ongoing diary written by an individual (Wikipedia “Blog”). Another popular form of blogging is corporate blogging, which is done by corporations in order to speak more personally with their customers (Rettberg 138). There is also micro blogging, which is when someone posts small pieces of content like pictures or links (Wikipedia “Blog”). As blogging has become more popular, there has been an increase in the genres that blogs cover. For example there are political blogs, health blogs, travel blogs, fashion blogs, and the list goes on and on (Wikipedia “Blog”). There are many blog types and genres, and as the field of blogging continues to grow there will most likely be even more in the future.
Justin Hall (pioneer of blogging)

Even though blogging is a relatively new creative field, there are still many important and influential people in the blogging world. One influential blogger is Justin Hall, who was one of the pioneers of blogging in the early 1990s (Rettberg 7).  Other famous bloggers include, Jenny Lawson, Tyler Cowen and Eric Wemple (McCraken 3-6). These bloggers gained their popularity through creating witty, funny and informational blogs on current events and their own opinions on the world (McCraken 6). Overall blogging is a rapidly growing field that anybody can take part in. All you really need to do is get on a blogging website and share your opinions to the world, or at least to whoever reads your blog.
